July 18, 2024

We want to congratulate the Honorable Governor Richard Ngiraked for receiving the check for the restoration of Diong er a Olekang located in the Ngerdimes region of Kayangel State. The community members of Kayangel State did a tremendous amount of work to restore this valuable cultural site. Acting Minister Terra Sai Nabeyama, along with Director Kiblas Soaladaob of the Bureau of Cultural and Historical Preservation, and Palau Registrar McMichael Mutok Jr., were present to acknowledge this significant milestone.

This important cultural site was listed in the Palau Register of Historic Places on September 02, 1999. The rehabilitation project, which commenced January 2024, is expected to be completed by August 2024. The project involves clearing and removing overgrown vegetation, dredging, and restoring stone walls.
This special project is made possible with funding from the Bureau of Environment under the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and the Environment. It is part of the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in collaboration with the Pacific Community (SPC), delivering the 4-year (2021-2024) Managing Coastal Aquifers Project.
