Palau has acquired membership in the prestigious Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS). AIMS collaborates closely with World Athletics to guarantee the precision of road race measurements, a crucial aspect for the official ratification of road race records by the IAAF.

The Belau Omal Marathon encompasses a comprehensive range of distances, including a full marathon (42 kilometers or 26 miles), a half marathon (21 kilometers or 13 miles), 10 kilometers, and 5 kilometers, all meticulously aligned with the stringent standards set forth by AIMS.

In a remarkable display of determination, the Belau Omal Marathon defied the relentless rain that accompanied the event on Sunday, June 4, 2023. The inaugural internationally certified marathon in Palau witnessed an impressive turnout of over 500 runners, who braved the elements to create unforgettable moments. This inspiring event, bolstered by enthusiastic volunteers and spirited spectators, unfolded from late afternoon into the early evening.

The Belau Omal Marathon attracted elite runners from across the globe, each striving to surpass their personal bests. Lauri Raunio of Finland emerged victorious, clinching the inaugural championship with an impressive time of 3 hours, 8 minutes, and 4 seconds. Following closely was Hugh Tibbs from the United Kingdom, securing the second position with a remarkable time of 3 hours, 17 minutes, and 48 seconds. Alex Chuo of Taiwan secured the third spot, displaying exceptional endurance as he completed the marathon in 4 hours, 9 minutes, and 4 seconds.
