ZIKA VIRUS ALERT (NOV.16, 2016) - center for disease control and prevention (cdc) alert LEVEL 2: PRACTICE ENHANCED PRECAUTION

The Republic of Palau Ministry of Health through the Bureau of Public Health has received labratory confirmation from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of a past ZIKA virus infection in a person in Palau. The case has had no recent travel history to any Zika-affected areas and is likely to have been infected in Palau. The Bureau of Public Health has initiated activities to control and prevent further spread of the Zika virus.

Because Zika virus is primarily spread by mosquitoes, CDC recommends that travelers to Palau protect themselves from mosquito bites (wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/page/avoid-bug-bites). Prevent bug or mosquito bites by:

  1. Use EPA-registered insect repellant that contain at least 20% DEET.
  2. Cover exposed skin as much as possible, wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants and socks.
  3. Avoid bugs where you are staying. Choosing accommodation that are well enclosed  so mosquito or bugs can't get inside.

Departure Tax & Green Fee US$50.00

On departure, a Green Fee of US$30.00 in addition to the US$20.00 departure tax must be paid by departing non-citizen passengers. The Green Fee fund the Palau Protected Area Network (PAN), an innovative mechanism designed to protect Palau's critical biodiversity and ensure that our natural resources are effectively conserved. The PAN sites count towards the Micronesian Challenge whereby our goal is to effectively conserve at least 30% of the near-shore marine resources and 20% of the terristrial resources.
