Palau Visitors Authority (PVA) representatives will travel with Palauan fishermen to Yokohama, Japan on January 17-22, 2018 for the Japan Fishing Show.
Held at the Pacifico Yokohama, from January 19th – 21st, PVA will join over 200 exhibitors who will meet more than 50,000 visitors over the 3-day event. Local sportsfishing tour operators and members of Real Fishermen, a sustainable fishing program from Ebiil Society, Inc., will join the PVA booth. In addition to meeting consumers, PVA is also arranging for meetings with popular fishing equipment brands, all for the purpose of promoting sportsfishing in Palau.
Angling is big business in Japan and the fishing public is particularly well-served with some of the best gear manufacturers in the world. The expo will also feature an “Angler’s Idol” competition in which some young female anglers will demonstrate their talents on stage. The show is a collaboration of the Japan Fishing Tackle Manufactures Association, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, the Kanagawa prefectural Government, the City of Yokohama, the Japan Sportfishing Foundation, and the National Fishing Rod Fair Trade Conference.
Participating at the Japan Fishing Show will be Palau Sportsfishing Association President Shallum Etpison and members Siegfried B. Nakamura and Jennifer Gibbons, as well as fishermen Stomu Olebuu, Hadley Renguul, Edward Tadao, Lazarus Meyar, Newman Andres, Erik Vereen, Lyman Singeo and Beches Singeo. Ebiil Society's Executive Director Ann Singeo and Fisheries Coordinator Taina N. Yano will also join. PVA Chairman Ngiraibelas Tmetuchl will attend PVA's booth together with PVA Managing Director, Stephanie B. Nakamura and Marketing & Programs Manager Andrea V. Naivana.
As posted in social media by some of the team members, "We are a group of likeminded fishers and conservation practitioners traveling to Japan to market Fishermen-based catch and release sportsfishing and Ngerael Marine Protected Area - exclusive zone for catch and release as part of the promotion of sustainable fisheries for Palau. Establishment of Ngerael MPA in Ngarchelong is a result of Fishermen advocating after initiation of the first catch and release games beginning in Ngarchelong. We are most grateful for PVA's support premiering Palau Fishermen at a trade show for the first time. It's the kind of support that encourages people to want to do more for the sustainability of Palau's ocean."
