On May 08, 2026, the Ministry of Human Resources, Culture, Tourism, and Development (MHRCTD), through the Bureau of Cultural and Historical Preservation (BCHP) and the Bureau of Tourism (BOT), recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the State Governments of Airai, Aimeliik, and Ngchesar, together with the Palau Visitors Authority (PVA), to support the development and maintenance of interconnected hiking trails, including parts of the historic Rael Kedam trail system.
This effort is part of ongoing work to promote sustainable eco- tourism while also protecting Palau’s important cultural and historical sites. The trails will provide more opportunities for both visitors and local communities to experience Palau’s natural environment, traditional landscapes, and cultural heritage.
The project will also help bring more attention to historic paths and sites that have long connected communities across Babeldaob. By working together with the states and partners, the Ministry hopes to strengthen preservation efforts while creating meaningful outdoor and cultural experiences for future generations.
We are deeply grateful to the NZMFAT CAB Smart Grant Project for their generous support, which has made this initiative possible. MHRCTD is equally honored to recognize and thank the State Governments of Airai, Aimeliik, and Ngchesar, as well as the Palau Visitors Authority, for their steadfast partnership and support. We look forward to continuing this collaboration and moving the project forward together.
