Landmark Hiking Trail Initiative Commences with State Partners

Ministry of HRCTD (BCHP & BOT), State Governments of Airai, Aimeliik, and Ngchesar, & Palau Visitors Authority (PVA)

A major step forward for terrestrial tourism in Palau has officially begun. The Ministry of HRCTD—through the Bureau of Cultural and Historical Preservation (BCHP) and the Bureau of Tourism (BOT)—has officially awarded initial funding to the State Governments of Airai, Aimeliik, and Ngchesar to kickstart the Landmark Hiking Trail Initiative.

This funding follows a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed on May 08, 2026, alongside the Palau Visitors Authority (PVA), to develop, maintain, and promote a premier network of interconnected hiking trails.

Our Vision: This landmark agreement highlights Palau’s commitment to advancing sustainable tourism. By expanding eco-conscious land-based adventures, the initiative will integrate and protect significant cultural heritage sites—ensuring Palau’s rich history and natural beauty are preserved for generations to come.

A Shared Commitment to Sustainability

This foundational project is made possible through incredible international and local cooperation. We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to: The New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs: For their generous support through the Climate and Biodiversity Smart Grant Project for Marine Spatial Planning. The State Governments of Airai, Aimeliik, and Ngchesar: For their vital partnership, vision, and cooperation.

We look forward to working hand-in-hand with our state partners to strengthen our communities, celebrate our culture, and pave the way for sustainable tourism.
