In preparation for the Micronesian Islands Forum in Pohnpei and the Pacific Islands Forum hosted in Palau, Director Peter Polloi of the Bureau of Aviation & Palau National Aviation Administration and Palau Visitors Authority Marketing Representative Kiruu Kanai traveled to Chuuk State from August 12–18, 2026, to participate in the Chief Executive Council (CEC) meeting of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM).
The delegation was invited by the Honorable Alexander Narruhn, Governor of Chuuk State in partnership with Caroline Islands Air, to present to the CEC on opportunities to strengthen regional air connectivity, with Palau positioned as a potential gateway and regional hub for travel to the FSM.
The proposed connectivity concept would create greater opportunities for international visitors—particularly divers and adventure travelers—to travel between Palau and the FSM, including Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei, and Kosrae, while taking advantage of the visa-free travel arrangements available between Palau and the FSM for eligible travelers. Such connectivity would encourage visitors to explore multiple destinations within Micronesia rather than limiting their travel to a single island or country, helping to strengthen regional tourism and economic opportunities.
Following the CEC presentation, the delegation was invited by the Honorable Lester D. Mersai, Speaker of the Chuuk State House of Representatives, to present these proposed air connectivity opportunities to the legislative branch. The additional engagement provided an opportunity to build broader understanding and support among policymakers and to discuss the importance of inter-island connectivity in advancing regional tourism, trade, and economic development.
Beyond the official meetings, the delegation also had the opportunity to experience and assess several of Chuuk’s cultural and historical attractions, hosted by Marcellus Akapito, Executive Director of the Chuuk Visitors Bureau. Their itinerary included visits to the Faichuk Canal and the Japanese Cannon on Weno, providing valuable firsthand insight into Chuuk’s cultural heritage and tourism assets that could complement future multi-destination tourism packages connecting Palau with the FSM.
The Palau delegation extends its sincere appreciation to Mr. & Mrs. BJ Mori for their generous hospitality, including hosting several lunches & dinners at Lei-Side Café and providing accommodation at Rachel’s Beach Resort. Their support contributed greatly to a welcoming and productive visit.
The visit to Chuuk represents another important step toward strengthening Micronesia as a connected tourism region, with Palau serving as a potential gateway through which international visitors can access and explore the wider FSM. Improved air connectivity has the potential to expand visitor dispersal, create new tourism products, strengthen cultural exchange, and generate economic opportunities for communities throughout Micronesia.
