From May 10–15, 2026, the 54th Annual Scientific Meeting of the South Pacific Underwater Medicine Society (SPUMS) was hosted in Palau. The conference brought together leading physicians, researchers, diving professionals, hyperbaric medicine specialists, and marine experts from across the Pacific and beyond to exchange knowledge and advance the field of diving and underwater medicine. The 2026 meeting focused on the theme of “Freediving,” highlighting current research, safety practices, physiological studies, and emerging developments related to underwater activities and hyperbaric medicine.
The annual scientific meeting serves as SPUMS’ premier educational and networking event, promoting collaboration and the sharing of expertise in diving and hyperbaric medicine. Delegates participated in scientific presentations, workshops, and discussions addressing diver health and safety, underwater physiology, medical treatment, and innovations in the field.
Representing the Palau Visitors Authority, Managing Director Kadoi Ruluked welcomed the attendees to Palau. His support underscored the nation’s commitment to promoting sustainable marine tourism, ocean stewardship, and international partnerships that align with Palau’s reputation as a world-class diving destination.
The successful hosting of the SPUMS Annual Scientific Meeting further strengthened Palau’s position as a premier venue for international conferences and marine-focused scientific exchange. By bringing together experts dedicated to underwater medicine and diving safety, the event contributed to both professional development and greater appreciation of the ocean environments that connect Pacific communities.
