Belau Offshore Fisheries, Inc. (BOFI) is a leading organization dedicated to the sustainable management and administration of tuna and other fish species in Palau. In partnership with key entities including the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and the Environment (MAFE), Palau National Marine Sanctuary, Palau International Coral Reef Center, The Nature Conservancy, and Palau Community College, BOFI is at the forefront of promoting responsible fishing practices and marine conservation.
As the sole administrator of tuna and other fish species, BOFI operates under a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment, and Tourism (MNRET), effective May 7th, 2020. This agreement recognizes BOFI’s expertise in purchasing, handling, storing, processing, and distributing tuna and other fish species. The organization is committed to enhancing Palau's domestic market for tuna, improving food security, and ensuring a thriving, sustainable fishery.
BOFI is deeply engaged in community support, contributing to First Responders, the Palau International Coral Reef Center, and the Ekei Organization. Looking ahead, BOFI will focus on training local fishermen, implementing fish handling techniques to preserve quality, promoting pole-and-line fishing methods, and developing operational guidelines. Additionally, BOFI will conduct cost-benefit analyses and work with Koror State Government and other stakeholders to secure fishing areas for live bait.
Through its comprehensive approach and collaborative efforts, BOFI aims to strengthen Palau's fisheries sector while upholding the highest standards of sustainability and environmental stewardship.
